Gwynnevere Vang, a member of the Tartan Senior High School class of 2022, is the 2022 ThreeSIxty Journalism Scholar. She receives a full-tuition, four-year scholarship to study journalism in the Department of Emerging Media at the University of St. Thomas College of Arts and Sciences, starting in fall 2022.
Vang said winning the scholarship is a big honor for her as well as her family.
“I’m the first grandchild in my family to go to college, and with a full-tuition scholarship, so it sets the bar for succession and motivation for the younger generations,” she said. “It also acknowledges how taking opportunities toward interests can lead to a future career and makes me more of a role model than I already was.”
Each year, high school seniors who are graduates of a ThreeSixty summer journalism camp compete for the ThreeSixty scholar award valued at more than $160,000 over four years.
Vang said her career goals are to tell more stories about the planet.
“My career goal is having the ability to travel around the country, maybe even the world, to tell stories about how the Earth needs help. The Earth means a lot to me because of its natural beauty and ecosystem, but there are harmful things that need to be brought to light in order to preserve the Earth,” she said. “I want to be a part of that change on our planet!”
Associate Director Theresa Malloy Lemickson said, “Gwynn is a shining example of the ThreeSixty Scholar. She is passionate about telling meaningful stories with big career goals. We have watched her grow in confidence and curiosity, and I have no doubt she’ll achieve and exceed her own ambitions.”
Vang joined ThreeSixty in summer 2020 and continued on with school-year programming. In 2021, Vang participated in TV Broadcast Camp. She also participated in journalism classes in high school and published the school’s Plaid Press.
Vang said she is looking forward to growing more as a journalist at St. Thomas, so she can tell stories to “help me connect more with people, leading me to find a large and supporting community.”
Currently, there are four ThreeSixty scholars attending St. Thomas.
