July camps at ThreeSixty Journalism have come to a close. Advanced students completed our Sports Writing Workshop, PR & Advertising Camp and TV Broadcast Camp.
At each camp, student had the opportunity to work with mentors ranging from St. Thomas Emerging Media professors to local TV news broadcasters who all volunteered their time to guide these young students.
Each camp is held at the University of St. Thomas College of Arts and Sciences campus in St. Paul, where students are able to get a glimpse of college life and make connections in the world of higher education.
Learn more below about all the wonderful camps from July 2022.
Sports Writing Workshop
Five ThreeSixty advanced reporters had the opportunity of a lifetime covering the Minnesota Lynx game on July 6, 2022, an upset win over the Chicago Sky. Through a partnership with the Timberwolves and Lynx and Star Tribune, the Junior Reporter experience included courtside and locker room media access, and students participated in the coach’s press conference.
They interviewed the WNBA stars and saw their stories published on the WNBA and Lynx website. Students also visited the Star Tribune’s office in downtown Minneapolis and worked with reporters and editors on the sports desk to finish their stories. Check out the stories online.
PR & Advertising Camp
Nine advanced students attended ThreeSixty Journalism’s PR & Advertising Camp this year. From July 18-23, students were taught by St. Thomas Emerging Media Department professors to create their own advertising and PR campaign.
St. Thomas staff along with ThreeSixty and additional mentors helped students design their own social media ads warning about the dangers of social media addiction. The students then brought all their work together to create a cohesive ad campaign that they then were able to present to a professional firm Weber Shandwick in Minneapolis.
“It was a very valuable experience, I learned a lot about PR especially. Paul did a great job of keeping us engaged and giving examples of concepts that we learned.”
– ThreeSixty Student Anna Adamson
TV Broadcast Camp
Nine future photojournalists attended ThreeSixty Journalism’s TV Camp this year. From July 25-29, these students produced their own professional news package on a variety of complex stories.
The camp was held in partnership with the Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of MN which helped pair students with organizations fighting for health equity in the Twin Cities community. Our students researched, filmed, interviewed and edited their own stories with the help of partners throughout the local broadcast news industry. For 2022, media partners included the University of St. Thomas, Padilla, KARE 11, WCCO TV, TPT, FOX 9, the University of MN Hubbard School of Journalism & Mass Communication and BMA Cable Networks.
