ThreeSixty kicked off its summer of programming with a week-long College Essay Boot Camp. This summer, the camp was girls-only, thanks to a partnership with the YWCA’s Girls Inc. Eureka! program. The students spent the week learning how to write a college essay to help them get in to the school of their choice and earn scholarships.
Students learned about everything from how to write a strong introduction to adding sensory details. They also had the opportunity for one-on-one coaching with women in professional fields, including a professor from the Dougherty Family College and a few ThreeSixty alumna.
Additionally, they heard presentations from Amanda Yang, a first-generation college student and admissions counselor at St. Thomas, and Marsha Pitts-Phillips, a professional speaker and former teacher, who is a long-time ThreeSixty supporter.
At the end of the week, students had the chance to share the essays they wrote at a celebration with family, friends and Girls Inc. staff. It was an emotional event that showcased how hard the girls worked and how strong their writing skills had become.
The completed essays will appear in the ThreeSixty September magazine and online later in the summer.
