ThreeSixty senior Faaya Adem, a student at FAIR School Downtown, was recently awarded the Dow Jones News Fund Scholarship.
Adem is one of six students nationally to win the $1,500 college scholarship, which she plans to apply toward her studies at the University of Minnesota Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
In her scholarship essay, Adem wrote about her Oromo roots in Ethopia as a powerful motivator for her passion for journalism.
“Diversity and equity in journalism are key to improving the livelihood of underreported and misrepresented communities. Accurately reporting the stories around me is what pushes me to a career in journalism,” she said. “The idea of having more thoughtful representation is a dream, but it will not happen without someone like me becoming involved in journalism.”
ThreeSixty Journalism receives funding from the Dow Jones News Fund for its News Reporter Academy.
Adem was nominated by Associate Director Theresa Malloy Lemickson, who said, “Faaya is convicted to making our world a better place. She approaches journalism with fearlessness and does not fail to see its power. I have no doubt she has a brilliant future ahead. She will be the industry disruptor, innovator and changemaker.”
